The Philippines avenged their hometown defeat against Kazakhstan by masterfully showcasing its full offensive arsenal against the valiant effort of the Kazhaks with the score of 93 -75.
The Philippine team was backed against the wall and they delivered when it’s needed but not everything is in their control.
Everything Fell in the Right Place
Basketball Gods have given the Philippines a second chance when Lebanon fell in the hands of Korea in a game that happened simultaneously.
The loss of the Lebanese means the Philippines would be getting the slot for the World Cup after ending the qualifier with a 7-5 win-loss ratio.
The Philippines was jocking for the 3rd place against Japan earlier but the Japanese found a new found groove that leads them to win their last 8 games and becoming the second placer in group F, even defeating powerhouse Iran who falls to number 3.
Thankfully, China in group E was automatically qualified for being the host of the upcoming FIBA World Cup. The pieces fell in the right place and we are able to qualify.
Andray Blatche was the difference maker
Yes, the Filipino players did well but Andray Blatche made the biggest contribution not just in points scored.
Aside from having 41 points, he also grabbed 13 rebounds, added 3 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Blatche was amazing for the Philippines and it is safe to say that having him as part of the team made the Gilas significantly better.
World Cup for the 2nd time in recent years
On to the World Cup which will happen in September. There are no big expectations in this tournament as it is basically a competition already between the best of the best in the world. While we are not expected to win the tournament, the Filipino fans still expect no less from the team other than to play hard and show heart in every game because maybe, just maybe, we can win a few games and show the world what Philippine basketbal is all about.
Congrats Team Philippines!
